Magical Venice iPad app

Magical Venice is a photo collection featuring images of the famously beautiful Italian city. Here’s how its creator describes it

Magical Venice is an intimate photographic portrait of this unique city and its lagoon. The images are the result of over 25 years of work by Venetian born photographer Roberto Soncin Gerometta, and are accompanied by the music of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Roberto was kind enough to offer me a promo code for the app, and I’ve been taking a look at it over the last week or so. Hit the jump for a few quick thoughts on it, and some of the gorgeous photos …

Notes

There are no hidden features or extra bells and whistles with this app. It’s a great collection of photographs, displayed well.

The photos are organized into galleries, covering: Venice Winter, Gondolas and Boats, Venice Carnival, Murano Island & Glass, Venice Island, Lagoon of Venice, Burano Island & Lace, Torcelio Island.

You can easily toggle the classical music on or off within each gallery – and you can swipe through the images yourself or play a slideshow to see them.

Highlights

— The photos, of course. It’s great to see a collection like this from a native son of Venice.

— I like the simple and almost understated UI of the app – it’s lets you just enjoy the photos themselves.

Lowlights

None to speak of.

Overall

Magical Venice is not an app with a broad or huge reach. You probably need to be someone who loves photography (maybe especially of cities), loves Venice or finds it an interesting city even if you’ve not yet experienced it, in order to find the app appealing.

Having said that, if you do have any interest in Venice, or in photography, this is a very nicely done app. Great photos of a great city. I would imagine the city’s Tourist Board are big fans of this app. I’ve never been to Venice, but these beautiful images make me want to go there more than ever.

You can find Magical Venice for the iPad in the App Store now, priced at $1.99. There’s also an iPhone version for $0.99.
